About Me
I was 1 Year Old when I sat on the first horse;
She was my Mum's old competition horse, Katinka. Growing up, every time I was at my grandparents farm I would spend hours chatting with her, getting knots out of her mane and brushing her.
I spent every school holiday at my Aunt's place playing with horses, cleaning up stables and helping wherever I could. I was hooked!! At 6 years old I decided I wanted to be a Veterinarian and my dream never wavered from there!!
I got my first pony when I was 10 years old - Ellie. A super sweet pony who taught me to ride as she used to bolt.
I was kicked in the head when I was 12 years old by a horse we had - Dancer lunging him around on a too short lead. This did not deter me!!
We bred a mare from Katinka - her name was Katara and she used to buck and rear! The only horse to get me off at a competition!!
My second horse that was mine was a green beautiful thoroughbred - Jake. I adored him and owned him throughout my teenage years until I had to sell him due to studying Veterinary Science. He would lie down when girthed and had issues with his canter.
After graduating from University of Melbourne Veterinary Science in 2004 I was able to buy myself an off the track thoroughbred - Jack. Over a couple of short years we were training 1m show jumping and leading up to flying changes, pirouettes and half pass. He was the best!! He became a headshaker. We got that under control and I had to sell him as I was heading overseas to work and travel for a couple of years. That was a very very sad day.
The horses that were part of my life always had issues and what I didn't understand growing up was about saddle fit, bit fit and body issues.
These horses motivated me to find a better way to understand what was going on for them and to recognise that their behaviour was pain related and not just bad behaviour.
My journey as a Veterinarian became increasingly frustrating as I realised my dream to help animals was not all I imagined. I wanted to help them heal and understand the underlying issues!!
In my work placement experiences I had come across Dr. Ian Bidstrup, a spinal veterinarian and along with my horses inspired me onto the path of Animal Biomechanical Medicine.
My first bodywork qualification in 2012 was with Ali Goward - Equine Muscle Release Therapy - this enabled me to start my own business Integrated Veterinary Therapeutics and gradually I moved out of veterinary practice and became all encompassed in the transformation of horses with bodywork.
I have since studied many other modalities including Equi-taping, Vetkin Taping, Masterson Method, CranioSacral, Integrative Acupuncture with Dr Kerry Ridgeway(dec) - a wonderful man, Acupuncture Oriented Energetics with Dr. Christian Torp, Saddle fitting and myofascial release.
In 2014 I completed the Graduate Diploma of Animal Biomechanical Medicine - Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Rehabilitation Techniques.
In 2012 I also met Dr. Sharon May–Davis PhD and my life was forever changed - I realised even more the limitations of Veterinary Science and was opened to a world of Equine Anatomy and Biomechanics that was inspiring, overwhelming and mind blowing all at the same time.
Sharon took me under her wing and mentored me through dissections and hands on clinics to take over her teachings in Biomechanics and Anatomy internationally. My passion for teaching and education was inspired from there and I pursued a career as an Academic at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, NSW teaching in the Bachelor of Equine Science. I taught injury, disease and rehabilitation, biomechanics and Exercise Physiology for 6 years. In that time I completed a Graduate Certificate in Learning and Education and explored research completing a Bachelor of Science(Hons) and mentoring honours students. I was also the president of the Animal Biomechanical Medicine Professionals and I am now an Instructor in that course for Osteopaths, Chiropractors and Veterinarians.
In 2023 I decided research was not my path and moved back into my own business treating horses and developing online education resources to enhance horses' wellbeing through posture.
I am also pleased to be a part of the wonderful companies of Equinology and the Academy of Animal Sport Science as an Instructor continuing to further enhance the skills and knowledge of others so together we can change the world for the horse..
Over this time I have been through journeys with my own horse teachers that have truly inspired me to understand and help them more
Henry - I part owned him from purchase at the magic millions, after all the top barrier trainers he would stay in the barrier until the others jumped and then catch them but it hindered his ability to win. He came to me on retirement, he was an absolute handful - causing a number or injuries including a damaged toe nail and kicking me in the guts because I touched him with the whip. I realised although I had horses most of my life I had very limited ground work skills. This took me to Mel Fleming who changed my life in my skills to work with horses on the ground and I also began my in-hand postural journey with Henry learning how to help him with his balance and movement through Thirza Hendrks. Henry Schmenry is still with me and rules the roost with the utmost regard for me.
Moonie - was given to me as a project horse. He is a windsucker with a traumatic chest injury. He has taught me that not all horses want to work and to allow him his habit but support him to reduce his stress. Moonie Moo is now 21 years old and living his best life.
Patch - Words do not describe what this pony taught me. Unfortunately she was not mine and had to go back to her owner. Patch taught me another level about posture in motion but on the deepest level she taught me what it was to have a true connection and a relationship of complete trust and to truly listen to a horse. Over 2 years we transformed her mind and body and created the most beautiful partnership riding out on trails bridleless and bareback. My most treasured moments with a horse to date.
Jelly - A special boy with the most willing attitude. He was given to me due to his needs, he has an underlying muscle condition - Myofibrillar Myopathy. This affects the contractile proteins of his muscles. He requires a special diet and he has so far taught me that diet and metabolic state play an integral part in the horse's ability to function. His muscle tension and shape can change in a matter of hours and I have had to learn what it takes to help him from a workload, dietary and body perspective. I am still learning.
Ellie-May - My young horse project. She is now 5 years old and we are slowly progressing in her starting her riding career. She is strong minded and has already had a number of physical issues. So far she is teaching me about the balance between the body, the mind and training.
My personal and professional experiences as well as my questioning mind and passion enables me a unique perspective when it comes to Equine management, performance and rehabilitation in order to support You on your journey.
